“No.84. A di 3 marzo 1774. Si sono trovate due maniglie di bronzo, come di una bussola, o stipo.”

 

According to the plan of La Vega, nos. 85 and 86 were found near the south wall of this room.

La Vega p.47, 14^th May 1774:

In Pompeii we continue to work lifting earth and rebuilding from inside the rooms of the usual house and continue to do the masonry to reinforce that which it is possible to leave standing in these rooms. They have begun to find some pieces of painted plaster amongst the ruins of the noted rooms; and now with others I have sent them to the Royal Museum, and they are –

PAH 1,1, p.276-7, 18^th June 1774: addendum p.132 and p.159 (La Vega: 85,86,87)

In the present week, we have entirely exposed two rooms and a corridor of the dwelling already said, outside of the city. The largest room among them was painted over an excellent stucco, with a vastness of works and with charming colours (con vaghissimi colori),but as to this decoration, not a lot of this portion remained to be able to form the entire idea, so one must note what is left. The footings of the colour of porphyry runs around the room, decorated by many panels, foliage and vases/pots: above these footings rise up the grotesque architecture, in some of which there are some figures and some animal comedies (degli scherzi di animali), but none of this architecture is entire in its height.

Each facade was divided into three spaces by the dividing architecture, and these were adorned with bands of many colors, and with meanders, intertwinings, and twigs; the main part of each space was on a white background, and was decorated with some colourful figures, which were –

in the middle of the main facade, a man clothed in a simple toga seated on a chair…… etc

To the” right” of the above painting, was a painting of a woman (a Muse) holding a tragic mask in her right hand, and a club balanced on her shoulder in her left hand.

At the side of the window (either west or east end of west wall) was a painted woman with blonde hair and golden earrings, holding a triangular instrument (similar to a harp with eight cords and two golden arms).

PAH 1,1, p.276-7, 18^th June 1774: addendum p.132 and p.159 (La Vega: 85,86,87) (Continued from above)

Of the frieze of the room there was a small portion, which was decorated apart from arabesques, garlands, and others, with vine-shoots with vine-leaves and grapes, and by Cupids playing with baskets; and a small portion of the vault remained with paintings of the same taste as the rest of the room.  The floor was of white mosaic with a black band all around, which was covered by a carpet-mosaic, according on whether all the signs have been found.

 

The smaller room which was almost completely dark, was nonetheless painted though ordinarily with panels and arabesques.

In these rooms were found:  4 bronze door hinges, two of which their corresponding plates; two hinges; a ring; a handle with its eyes; three eyes with pins to fasten them.

Due tondi, uno alto on. 2, diam. simile, e l’altro consimile. Una moneta di diam. on.1, che per la ruggine non si distingue. Ferro: Cinque pezzi, cioe una sciva, due pezzi come di altra sciva, e due come piastre per lo gioco degli assi di porta.”

Si sono trovati quattro tondi quasi uguali, alt. on. 2, diam. consimile, due con piastre che appartengono alla porta che communica col corridore, e due alla finestra che corrisponde al portico del giardino. Una sciva e mezza. Un anello di diam. on. 1 e mezza. Tre pezzi come zeppe, col bottone occhiato. Una maniglia con le sue scive, lunga on. 3 e mezza; il tutto di bronzo.”

From PAH addendum, p.159-160 - 18 Giugno 1774 – Altre due stanze dipinte, una delle quali piu grande con finestra nella nota abitazione suburbana, al paro col portico orientale del giardino; no. 85, 86, 87 pianta di La Vega. La descritta parete era riporata nel vol. degli Ornati etc. pubblicata per la Stamperia Reale 1808. Pittura di un istitutore con suo allievo e matrona. Baccante che balla con un giovine. Altra simile. Urania con Minerva. Melpomene. Tamburistria. Indizio di un tappeto sul pavimento a musaico della suddetta stanza; no. 85, 86, 87 pianta di La Vega.

According to the plan by La Vega, No.81 was found in the above corridor, but there were two No.81’s shown.

The one shown on PAH addendum, p.160 – dated 25th June 1774 would seem to fit in with the dates when the surrounding rooms were excavated – but no further details are shown.

(The other No.81 would seem to be from 7^th or 9^th December 1773, and from the west side of the cellar below the garden area, and said –

On the west side of the east portico, on the left in the garden area, nos. 89, 54 and 77 (from the La Vega plan) would have been found.

 “No.89. A di 28 luglio 1774. Tra il rivegine si e trovata una maniglia con le sue scive lunghe on.3.  Un anello di diam. on.2. Una picciola guarnizione di mascatura. Due grappe.

Un chiodo, e quattro diversi pezzetti; il tutto di bronzo.”
