Villa San Marco, Stabiae, July 2010. Photo courtesy of Michael Binns. The wording on the above notice in the villa (dated 2005) said – “The service quarter of the villa consists of the kitchen 26 and a series of small contiguous tiny rooms (27-39-40-54), serving as storerooms, and/or servants’ sleeping places. The kitchen is largely occupied by a masonry hearth, resting on four arches suited for storage. The cooking surface is clad with terracotta fragments. A four-sided sink points to its use for dishwashing. Several graffiti of Roman numerals can be noticed on the walls, also showing traces of the 18th century tunnelling in two breaches in the southern and western wall. On February 14th 1752, in fact, as recorded in contemporary excavation journals, a lararium painting whose gaping trace still shows in situ, was detached and taken away”.
