VIII.7.28 Pompeii. June 2019. Terracotta decorated puteal with
Hercules in scenes of the rituals of Bacchus.
The upper part has four ionic columns with figured capitals. Between are four figures in relief.
One figure shows Hercules brandishing a club in his right hand while holding a crown in his left.
A youth holds a vase on his left shoulder and looks right towards the third figure.
The third person advances uncertainly, manifested by the enlarged position of legs and arms.
The last figure has the pose of the Hercules urinating, but wears Dionysus's tall boots and holds a tympanum in the left.
It seems to be a Dionysian procession in which the hero participates.
The lower part is decorated with incisions imitating isodomic masonry (blocks with staggered joints).

accommodation). Photo courtesy of Buzz Ferebee.
