Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 111481.
Kuivalainen comments: This composition may be an alternative artistic interpretation of Bacchus and Ariadne after having reached an understanding. The cupid is indeed sometimes depicted with Ariadne, not only with Venus. Ariadne’s yellow robe can refer to her bridal status.

A painted flying Apollo and the separate nine Muses were seen and painted by August Sikkard in 1879.
These would have been seen in the side panels of the triclinium.
One of the Muses was already destroyed at the time of excavation.
Today the others are hardly recognisable or completely disappeared.
Apollo was seen playing the cithara, and then there were -
Urania with globe
Melpomene with tragic mask, lion’s skin and club
Terpsichore with the lyre
Euterpe with a flute
Clio with pen and scroll (in the painted original, the scroll of this Muse was inscribed “Melpomene ex Musis una”
Thalia with a comic mask
Polyhymnia with no attributes
Calliope with a cithara
Erato was missing

IX.5.14 Pompeii. Room “f”, triclinium. 1879 copy by A. Sikkard of painting of the muse Clio with pen and scroll.
In the painted original, the scroll of this Muse was inscribed “Melpomene ex Musis una”.
This led to it being identified by Sogliano as “once again Melpomene”, making it the second of that muse in the same room.
Horst Blanck, in Italienische Reise, identified it as Clio, commenting that the inscription was “a sign that the ancients too had difficulty with the identification of individual muses”.
