IX.5.14 Pompeii. Room “f”, centre of north wall of triclinium. Painting of two men before a seated queen.
According to PPM this is of uncertain identification.
More recently it has been suggested that it may be Dido receiving Aeneas for the first time.

IX.5.14 Pompeii. May 2005. Room “f”, north wall of triclinium with painting cut from it.
In the black zoccolo were panels with squares alternating with narrow compartments with painted plants:
Seen in the side panels of the red middle zone of the wall, were vignettes with painted Muses, (but badly preserved).
In the centre would have been a painting with a scene of uncertain identification, possibly Dido receiving Aeneas for the first time.
A painted flying Apollo and the separate nine Muses were seen and painted by August Sikkard in 1879.
These would have been seen in the side panels of the triclinium.
One of the Muses was already destroyed at the time of excavation.
Today the others are hardly recognisable or completely disappeared.
Apollo was seen playing the cithara, and then there were -
Urania with globe
Melpomene with tragic mask, lion’s skin and club
Terpsichore with the lyre
Euterpe with a flute
Clio with pen and scroll (in the painted original, the scroll of this Muse was inscribed “Melpomene ex Musis una”
Thalia with a comic mask
Polyhymnia with no attributes
Calliope with a cithara
Erato was missing
