VII.9.7 and VII.9.8 Pompeii. Macellum. March 2009. Remains of Sarno painting in centre of east wall of large room in south-east corner.
According to Stefani, it was a fourth style picture in the centre of the wall.
Various people were portrayed on it representing the river Sarno, the sea and plain.
Top left was a seated male figure, representing Vesuvius.
Centre top was a young male figure, representing Sarno, holding a vase from which a jet of water was coming.
Top right were three female figures, generally referred to as nymphs, but could represent the 3 tributaries that feed the river.
Bottom left was a seated male figure in profile representing the coast.
Bottom right was a female figure with two children, interpreted as the personification of the fertile valley crossed by the river Sarno.
This painting was said to represent the produce of the sea and countryside that were sold here.
