VII.6.27 Pompeii. Shop. Linked to VII.6.26.

Excavated 1868, 1873, 1910. Bombed in 1943.

According to Garcia y Garcia Region VII, Insula VI was one of the insulae most devastated over the years since its excavation.

He calls it the “Cinderella” of Pompeii. Between the years 1759 and 1762 it was vandalised and stripped by the Bourbons, then re-interred.

Then came the slow and non-systematic uncovering again before the final destruction in September 1943.

The area was ignored and abandoned during the years following the war, which reduced the insula to a heap of bricks and masonry.

According to Fiorelli,

Then follows two workshops linked between them, the first with podium with two urns and the hearth, a room in the interior, and another more at the rear with the latrine: the second had the stairs for the mezzanine, and a room behind.

(Seguono due botteghe communicanti tra loro, la prima con podio per due urne ed il focolare, una cella nello interno, ed altra piu in fondo con la latrina: la seconda avente la scaletta per l’ammezzato, ed una cella dietroposta.)

According to Eschebach, a graffito was found here –

C(asellium) Marcellum aed(ilem) v(irum) b(onum) d(ignum) r(ei) [p(ublicae)] o(ro) [v(os) f(aciatis]    [CIL IV 541]

Site of rooms around south and east side of atrium of VII.6.28, and in the right lower corner, the site to VII.6.27, after the bombing.

According to Fiorelli and Eschebach, this shop had a staircase to the upper floor against the west wall, a doorway linking to VII.6.26 in the east wall, and a rear room.
