V.3.11 Pompeii. March 2009. Looking west across tablinum to entrance to garden area.
The entire width of the tablinum was opened onto the atrium. The floor was made of opus signinum with a mixture of marble fragments. The painted dado imitated precious marbles with large yellow circles inscribed between squares of different marbles. Above were white panels divided by leafy green stems coloured bronze. In the centre of the north wall was a painting of a plate of fruit. On both sides were two small landscapes, hardly preserved, with figures in yellow. In that on the right, one could see a man getting on his donkey, and another racing behind on foot. On the north side of the west wall was another similar landscape, and a painting of two pheasants, one suspended by a thread that pierced the beak, the other lying down. In the south-west corner was a landscape which contained a cactus plant. In this area, the walls showed traces of redness and partial blackening due to fire. In the south wall, but not decorated, was a niche. Found in this room on the 5th May was a bronze pot, and on 6th May, remains of iron fixings and hinges of bone from a destroyed box. See Notizie degli Scavi, 1902, (p.371-2)
