SGF and SGG Pompeii. Tombs at Stabian Gate or Porta Stabia.

SGF Schola Tomb of Marcus Alleius Minius. SGG Enclosure at rear of schola.

Excavated 1888 to 1890.

Just outside the Porta di Stabia a pair of tufa schola tombs came to light in 1888-90.

One of these carried a large-scale inscription carved directly on the back telling that it was the tomb of M. Alleius Minius, duovir, the place of burial granted by decree of the decuriones.

Both tombs were no longer respected after A.D. 62 but were buried under dumps of debris from the earthquake.

See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1889, 280; 1890, 329-33l; 1891, 273-274.

See Richardson, L., 1988. Pompeii, An Architectural History. Baltimore: John Hopkins U. P. (p.254-5).

According to Mau:

The inscription of the second bench, like that of Mamia, is cut in large letters on the back of the seat :

M. ALLEIO Q. F. MEN. MINIO, II V. I. D.; LOCUS SEPULTURAE PUBLICE DATUS EX D. D. :

'To the memory of Marcus Alleius Minius son of Marcus, of the tribe Menenia, duumvir with judiciary authority. The place of burial was given in the name of the city by vote of the municipal council.'

See Mau, A., 1907, translated by Kelsey F. W. Pompeii: Its Life and Art. New York: Macmillan. (p.422-3).
