According to BdI – “where the vicolo meets with the “Strada della casina dell’aquila” (Via dell’Abbondanza now), it was surmounted by a wall that connects the two houses that makes a corner, so you enter the vicolo almost by a door: a unique case in Pompeii [at that time, 1867], which I could not explain other than assuming some communication of the upper floors of those houses; but no trace of it was given to me.”
