Extract from Bullettino Archeologico Napoletano no. X, 1 Giugno 1843.

Excavations in November and December 1842.
Wall and canal towards the city walls.
The ninth and tenth houses on one side, and the seventh on the other are the extremes towards the city walls. The alley parallel to that, where the entrance to the tenth house is, is open towards the walls, but the other parallel where the entrance to the ninth is, is closed on this side with a wall, so that it must be called impervium (angiportum). A large water channel then runs along the side of the seventh house that looks towards the walls: and the following excavations will tell us whether this channel, as it seems, also interrupted the alley, which, as we have said, is not enclosed by the walls.

Somewhat beyond the channel and the wall closing off the alley is a low wall against which the embankment in the shape of a shoe rested and was made up of simple ground which protected and covered the city walls on this side, the situation of which we will discuss in more detail in a separate article.
