VIII.7.28 Pompeii. On 1st March 1766, three fragments were found on the ground at the west end of the north portico.
According to P.P.M., these were reassembled to form a square on the upper part of the western section of the north wall.
In addition to the picture with landscape also preserved is part of the decorative context in which it was inserted.
The picture shows in the foreground a small island on which there is a building with two storeys of porticoes erected on a high podium and closed at the back by a row of cypress trees.
On the right, toward the shore, there are five cloaked figures and two other on the left, next to an ithyphallic statue. In the background are some arcaded buildings on stilts.
At the top of the fresco, resting on the picture frame, is a pediment with scrolls.
Below the picture frame is a dark red panel with the head of a goat.
To the side of the red panel is a tight garland on a white background.
The remarkable freshness of the colours and the legibility of the picture were probably the reasons that led the excavators to recover the three fragments.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 9490.

VIII.7.28 Pompeii. Part of the portico? Painting with basket, two birds and a landscape.
