VII.3.14 Pompeii. May 2010. Entrance to shop, looking east across Via Stabiana towards Via di Nola with Bottega del Cavalieri sign.

The tavern (VII, 3, 14-15) was one of the stops of the visit of Pope Pius IX on October 22, 1849, and from where was found, together with a lot of bronze materials and marble fragments, the bas-relief of the galloping cavalier (Museo Profano, Bib. Apostolica Vaticana, inv. 4092), of which there has been much debate about its true Pompeian origin, in a controversy that does not even seem settled after the study made by Conticello (AA.VV., 1987: 31-38, tav. 2) for the catalog of the exhibition twenty years ago dedicated to this visit.
