VI.17.1 Pompeii. May 2011. Looking west towards ramp leading to entrance.
According to Fiorelli, the first entrance commencing from the Herculaneum Gate was an inn with annexed bar. Recognisable by the lowered ramp for the access of the wagons and animals, by the wide doorway introducing into an area, that had on the right the kitchen, the shelter for the vehicles, the stable, the latrine, and a large room from which one went down to the cellar and passed in a space enclosed between the city gate and the city wall, used for the rubbish, where various animal bones were found. On the left and in front of it were dormitories, and maybe even dining areas.
