VI.11.3 Pompeii. Unnamed house. Excavated 1842. (Area bombed in 1943).

According to Fiorelli –

“Orto o giardino costituito sull’area di una casa caduta. A destra della porta eravi un triclinio finestrato, a sinistra due celle, e nello spazio intermedio un passagio coverto da tettoia per accedere al terreno coltivato, ove si trovano una gradinata di fabbrica, con altra cella rustica ed il focolare.”

See Pappalardo, U., 2001. La Descrizione di Pompei per Giuseppe Fiorelli (1875). Napoli: Massa Editore. (p.68).

(Vegetable garden or garden set up on the area of a fallen house. To the right of the doorway there was a windowed triclinium, to the left two rooms, and in the intermediate space a walkway covered by a canopy to access the cultivated land, where a masonry staircase was found, with another rustic room and the hearth.)

VI.11.3 Pompeii. December 2007. Entrance doorway, looking east.
According to Garcia y Garcia, a bomb fell on this area in 1943, causing some damage. When the area was first excavated, it was discovered still ruined from antiquity, perhaps from earthquake damage.
See Garcia y Garcia, L., 2006. Danni di guerra a Pompei. Rome: L’Erma di Bretschneider. (p.80) According to Jashemski, the garden area (excavated around 1842) occupied an area directly east of the entrance. After the damaged buildings had been cleared, it was used as a garden. See Jashemski, W. F., 1993. The Gardens of Pompeii, Volume II: Appendices. New York: Caratzas, (p.143)
