VI.5.9 Pompeii. May 2011. Doorway to latrine/small room in north-east corner of kitchen area.
According to Hobson, “As a result of the lack of preservation of wood in Pompeii, no doors have been found for latrines.
However, a large percentage of latrine rooms have threshold stones which may have grooves into which door posts were set.
Many of the rooms have a step up from the floor of the corridor or outer room.
This not only serves to differentiate the cubicle from other rooms, but also allows for the tile system to drain efficiently under the toilet seat.”
See Hobson, B., 2009. Latrinae et foricae: Toilets in the Roman World. London; Duckworth. (p.82 and fig.105, showing grooves for doorposts).
