According to Van der Graaff –
“Littered with scars from the Sullan siege, the fourteen-course section still displays some of the highest-quality finished masonry of the entire circuit (Note 75). It is also unique as the only stretch of fortifications composed entirely of tuff – a circumstance reflecting its prominent position next to the gate……….
The resulting effect set the stage for approaching viewers of the architectural character of the city behind the gate.”
