Redentoristi Colle Sant'Alfonso. 1964. Photo by Stanley A. Jashemski.
It sits on a hill of volcanic origin, S. Maria La Bruna, 185 metres high with Vesuvius behind to the north.
According to the church web site “the hill has suffered little from the devastating effects of nearby Vesuvius, from which a large valley separates it, enough to protect it from lava eruptions”.
The hill and church are a very prominent landmark to anyone travelling along the A3 autostrada who looks north towards Vesuvius.
