Ludovico Pepe - Gli Scavi a Valle di Pompei, 1887

In 1876, Countess De Fusco realized, for various specimen excavations made on her property at the Amphitheatre, that this was littered with ancient fabric still intact. And having stopped to dig at one point, she discovered rooms with paintings and a millstone. Remarkable were in these excavations the tombs found on the ashes of 79, which are the clearest evidence of the dwelling in Valle of the survivors of Pompeii.

See Pepe L, 1887.

In 1876 rooms were randomly found in the De Fusco farm with remnants of paintings similar to those of Pompeii.

And in 1880 the important excavations took place in the Valiante farm, beyond that of the De Fusco, which revealed streets, buildings, and abundant and precious relics of the time of Pompeii.

In September 1886, a stretch of the public road was found on the property of Signora Pacifico, adjacent to the amphitheatre, which, starting from the Pompeii gate overlooking Nocera

(porta secunda), crossed the valley, running as parallel to the modern road to Salerno. That street was lined with sepulchral monuments, rich in important inscriptions, that make you want the continuation of those excavations.

But in December of the same year other and more important excavations began on the De Fusco farm, which, directed by us, revealed much of the history of the valley.

The Comm. Ruggiero had seen in 1876, in the De Fusco farm, "quarry and then cover (because they had already been stripped and half destroyed) some old rooms with walls and remains of paintings very similar to those of Pompeii". Those ancient remains were indicated by Ruggiero at the Cava De Fusco, that is on the eastern side of the prehistoric lava line, which extends to the ancient and ruined Chapel of S. Abondio, meeting at the Amphitheatre. The excavations made at random, not encouraged by findings of any kind, were suspended before the monuments had been able to be recognized. Ten years later, that is, in December 1886, the lawyer Bartolo Longo, who transformed the countryside closest to the Amphitheatre into a splendid village as if by magic, intended that part of the De Fusco farm, closer to the buried ruins seen in 1876, be a public square, surrounded by houses, including those already destined for workers' houses. Once the foundations of these houses had been excavated, ancient remains that had not been known from previous excavations appeared, which were inexorably destroyed, and were buried under the new construction so there did not to remain hope of their being recognized. But when it was necessary to fill in the vast space of the square, l’Avvocato Longo was duly advised to make excavations behind the building site, which is as much to say in the place excavated in 1876; and such excavations lasted from December 10, 1886 until May 6, 1887.

We believe that the results obtained should delight those who are scholars of the monuments of Pompeii. Of course, in the great scarcity of information on Pompeii's relations with its territory, these monuments will seem to have a particular importance. We hasten to describe them briefly, referring to the reported plan of the excavations carried out so far.

In an area of about 2300 m. sq. excavation, a rectangular-shaped building appears, which, extending in the direction of the new workers' houses, of which we have mentioned, cannot in its extreme part ever be recognized. All the rest reveals a large-scale building, the purpose of which is not legitimately safe to ascertain, although many parts of the building for now conjecture to be a fullonica.

From the Nocerina gate (porta secunda}, or from the road that led from Pompeii to Nocera (of which a short stretch was found last year) another road had to branch off (a) which, descending through the valley down towards Stabia, led, perhaps exclusively, to our building. At a distance of 4.30 meters from the turn of the street, you will find a flat door (b), whose archway, 3.50 meters high from the floor, is surmounted by masonry the height of about 1 m, on whose edge the chimney of a pitched roof rests. Some of the tiles used for the roof were collected with the following stamp:

The street, unpaved, continues, flanked by two rustic walls high m. 1, 60, as a long, uncovered porch (c), up to another door (d), formed by two pillars, narrowing the width of the street, which gives access to a portico (e) with brick-built pillars alternating with rows of tuff (in the manner of the last times of Pompeii) and limited on the left by a rustic wall, similar to that of the street, and on the right by the northern side, of opus incertum, of the building. Here in the portico the ancient floor is kept covered and hidden by a layer of rubble, stones and debris, resulting from the masonry work that took place there. Immediately after the door, on the right, there is an opening (f) which led to the open countryside, the ancient furrows of which were recognized. You also needed that step to reach the latrine (g) for the use of the workers, built close to the rustic wall near the pillar to the right of the door.

Whoever stands on the sidewalk that flanks the facade mentioned, finds on the same facade the door (h) that led into the building, and properly into a spacious atrium (i), of which an area was covered following the door. Here, as in the street and in the portico, the material of the eruption was found intact, unexplored; whereby a dolium still in place (j) was found, three wine amphorae, a cup with agglutinated colours, a marble base, residues of mortar, from which the floor was white, fragments of locks and nails of crates and of the door. But by digging the excavations in the atrium, this was already found by the ancient scavengers, and two basins (k) were found with an order of channels in relation to other basins and canals of the rest of the factory. To the right of the door, five steps (l) lead to two rooms (m) whose walls are covered with plaster decorated with painted squares. Intended perhaps as the home of the owners, from the first one entered through a door (n) in the main part of the building, while from the other room it was possible to watch the work through a window (o) (See FIORELLI, Description of Pompeii, p. 285). In this second chamber, in two corners, limestone debris used to make plaster can be seen piled up.

Entering the workshop, two areas are presented to the attentive observer, of which the first (p) remains disfigured for some medieval constructions (q) leaning against the ancient walls, or settled in all directions on the shattered ruins mixed with the ash and lapillus of 79, and up to two metres high above the ancient floor, so that some walls fell removing those ruins. These constructions prevent recognition of the underlying works, which are preceded by a small column that overlays the ruins below. Thus a wall arm, which went to meet the ancient wall that delimits the two areas, had hidden a valuable painting. Randomly recognized by us and freed from the wall that kept it hidden, it was possible to recognize the representation of the genius familiare, who wrapped up to his head in a white toga, is standing to sacrifice before a round altar. He is located between two Lares, of which the one on the left is completely destroyed. To the right, after the lare, is Pan horned and crowned is represented in act of surprise, if not of threat. A similar figure, visible only in the lower part of the body, is also on the left. after the destroyed Lar. This representation of Pan as penate was recognized as unusual by the illustrious Prof. Sogliano, Inspector of the Pompeii excavations (Cf. Le Pitture Murali Campane of the same Prof Sogliano); hence the painting is carefully preserved by Avv. Longo, while a copy, by the artist Di Scanno, can be found in the National Museum of Naples.

The visible part of the first area includes the freshly plastered walls only for the height of 1.70m, and the floor is paved with relief around, and with slope, so as to make the waters flow in an underground channel of which three mouths are visible (r). Finally, it is worth noting a deep tank with internal ladder (s) and annexed channels.

The second area (t), with the plastered walls like those of the first, has a circular rise (u) almost in the middle of the floor, 0.055m high at the extreme of the circumference and in the centre a little more raised. In our opinion, this singular monument could have been destined to hold wedged still the light trabiccolo (wooden drying frame), which, as is known, was part of the tools used by the fullers (Cf. FIORELLI, Descriz. di Pompei, page 124). To meet this circular elevation, two small parallel basins (v) are made in the floor, reminiscent of those found in Pompeii, in which the fullones pressed the clothes; except that here there is no trace of the low walls on which you rested with your hands. For reasons, perhaps, of these basins the door above had been freshly walled, which created a windowed room (x) added separately to the north-east exterior wall. Having walled up  the door, is evident that they were not at ease with completing you the plaster: you see it abruptly interrupted. Even the window of that room overlooking the countryside was perhaps to have been reduced to a door in order to access it; and it remained as it was after an unexpected suspension of work.

In this part of the countryside not only the fact of a room without an entrance attracts the attention of the visitor; but still the singularity of the rest of the facade. Ancient construction of opus incertum, it is decorated with a series of primitive vertical cuts, almost slits, 1.30m high, delimited by pillars 0.30m wide, in antiquity plastered and then blocked in an era of other innovations. The faces of the slits, inclined inside, have the internal light of 0.10m. If, there are ten to the left of the windowed room and seven to right as far as the unknown destination, these cuts or slits mainly indicate the primitive, different destination and structure of the whole building, which presents itself to us in the process of reconstruction.

Returning to the second enclosure in question, we can see traced with charcoal, on the plaster of the pillar on the left of the walled door, of vertical signs, which are accounting notes relating to works carried out in the plant. After the pillar there is visible in the floor the stone placed at the base of the press (y) and next to it another channel mouth (z), perhaps in communication with others. And finally, to note the very large tub (aa), perhaps to keep the clothes soft, which is as long as the two enclosures are together.

All that remains is to mention the monuments dating back to the eruption, found by removing the upper layers. They are tombs dug in the ashes of 79, and, a short distance away, scattered around the mentioned buildings dating back to the first century. Of those tombs, the local peasants had found many of them devastated for the first time: in these excavations eight were discovered. Singular, however humble, seemed to us to be the tombs formed by two or more annular pieces of wine amphorae, containing the corpse as in a case, and lying on the ash and covered with earth (Cf. Notizie degli Scavi. Fase. January 1881, p. 30. Excavations in Castelsardo). Sometimes one or more long-split amphorae cover the body lying on the ash or lapillus. Another time the tomb, dug in the ash, until it reaches the lapillus, is covered with rectangular blocks 0.47m wide and 0.72m long, which, when they do not support a stone lid, close, converging, becoming the tomb themselves. One of the latter, 1.40m long, discovered on 17th January, was secured with cement, and had perpendicularly located on the chimney a duct formed by three terracotta pipes. It was the only tomb containing the burnt human remains, and it had two glass ointment jars, a clay lamp with a relief representing a cockerel, and various nails.

Corroded and oxidized coins were also found in the upper layers, including one in well preserved copper from the Emperor Diocletian. These tombs, these newer constructions leaning against the ancient ones, this third century coin are for us a clear proof of the vitality that has remained here, after the destruction of Pompeii, at this point so close to the amphitheatre. But the inhabitants of the valley, scarce, as shown by the same monuments found so far, never grew so much as to form a centre of life that could have made this place to be considered inhabited? The silence of the writers shows that this place was like desert, abandoned. According to the chronicler Martino Monaco in the year 838 Valle di Pompeii was not remarkable except for having its name from the destroyed and deserted city: it was a field no less deserted. Valle di Pompeii then (we believe we can conclude) until at least the ninth century appears deserted, so scarce and scattered are the inhabitants.

Discovered in the fondo de Fusco, near the amphitheatre. Report by Professor Sogliano

On the estate of the Countess de Fusco, located just below the amphitheatre, south-east of Pompeii near Fondo Pacifico (cfr. Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1887, p. 33), an excavation was undertaken in the fall of last year in order to have land in order to fill the square in the head of the road that leads to the Valle railway station.

As early as 1876 the current director of the Scavi comm. M. Ruggiero in the said fondo saw [Three years of] quarrying and then covering "some ancient rooms with walls and fragments of paintings, very similar to those of Pompeii" (Of the eruption of Vesuvius in the year LXXIX, in vol. Pompeii and the region buried by Vesuvius etc. p. 11).

See Ruggiero M., 1879.

From 21 December 1886 to 22 January of the current year, according to Sig. Ludovico Pepe, who diligently followed the progress of this excavation, they found, in the layer of ash, tile covered  tombs and amphorae containing the skeleton: from a tile covered tomb came two glass ointment jars and a single spout (monolychne) terracotta lamp, in which a disc on which a  cockerel inclined to the right is embossed, and hiding the trunk of a small tree placed in the bottom. Also in the upper strata of the earth was collected on February 11 a well-preserved bronze coin of Diocletian, of the type of Jupiter standing resting on the sceptre, with lightning in his hand, and with the legend in the reverse

lOVI CONSERVAT AVGG.

From January 22 to May 7, the day the excavation was suspended, what is seen in the annexed plan has been excavated:

Valle di Pompei, Fondo de Fusco. 1887. Floor plan reduced from one of greater size by Ing. Giovanni Rispoli.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1887, p. 247.

Valle di Pompei, Fondo de Fusco. 1887. Floor plan reduced from one of greater size by Ing. Giovanni Rispoli.

See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1887, p. 247.

The main excavation result is a complex of locales, which for now is limited to the West side, with all the eastern part still underground.

Its construction is of opus incertum, of limestone on the north side, of limestone and lava on the western side, and of lava in the south, strengthened in the corners by formed pillars of brick and limestone cut like brick, or of only limestone tiles, or finally of limestone blocks of greater size.

On the West side the outer wall has two sections, i.e., from both sides of the projection "10", a series of slits (1.35 m tall, width externally m. 0.19), plaster-coated and later walled up. This perforated wall brings to mind the walls of an area of a rustic Stabiana villa, which were also pierced by thick slits

See Ruggiero M., 1881. Degli scavi di Stabia dal 1749 al 1782, p. 339, n.27, tav. XII.

The northern side of the building faces a rectangular area "A", of a width of 7.70 m, and limited to the north by a wall "B-C" of opus incertum, 1.80 m high, and conformed above to two pioventi (rain channels?).. The floor of the area is of beaten earth, and the only clue, which could make it considered a street, is a sidewalk "a", with a limestone edge, 0.90 wide, 0.33 high, which is attached to the side north of the building, it goes towards the west, gradually lowering, until it reaches the ground level of the whole area. In the same, north side of the building, at the top of the external wall there is a series of square holes for the beams, which however do not cross the thickness of the wall, so that they do not correspond in the opposite side: and in the middle of the said area, at the distance of 3m.from the sidewalk, and as many from the "B-C" wall, exist the remains of five pillars, built of bricks and pieces of limestone, 2.95m. from each other.

Corresponding with these pillars, and leaning against the opposite face of the wall "B-C", are six other pillars, similarly made and still buried.

The said wall "B-C" to the west, turns at right angles at "C", to continue in the "D-E" section parallel to the wall "G-H", and in the form of an elbow in the "E-F" section. The wall "G-H" is not yet uncovered except at the top, which is also conformed to two pioventi (rain channels?). From the top of the outer and alternating "D" corner, a pillar protrudes in line with the five, which stood in the middle of the area, and to which corresponds another against the wall "G-H": both of these pillars, similar in construction to the others described, supported the lintel, and formed the entry "I". On the southern left pillar, at the height of m.1.55 from the ground, a phallus was fixed, as can be seen from the imprint left in the mortar; and on the pieces of limestone you can see traces of red letters, almost destroyed by the great porosity of the stone. On the north face of the pillar is the letter: M; on that west I thought I could read:

On the north face of the pillar is the letter: M; on that west I thought I could read: CROSi////D

CROSi////D and further below: S.

Leaning on the east face of this pillar, there is another, at the sixth of the pillars protruding from the wall "B-C"; and at the distance of m.2.05 to the east there is another one, leaning against the wall "G-H" and corresponding with the fifth of the pillars, which stood in the middle of the area. In "I" then this area narrows, measuring in width m.4.90; and just before the wall "D-E" forms an elbow, there is a second entrance "J", consisting of two pillars of only limestone, which supported the lintel, and protected the area by roofing protruding from one side and the other for m.1.40. Alongside this entrance a bronze coin of Philip IV, coined in 1630, was recovered from the earth. Next to the first entrance "I" behind the wall "G-H" is a latrine "K", not entirely uncovered.

In the building that I am going to describe, for now we enter only from the entrance "I" on the north side, which leads into the courtyard "2", not yet completely disinterred. In front of this entrance, without a threshold, the pavement is lowered forming a small ramp, now almost destroyed. In the courtyard, parallel to the northern entrance wall, there are two brick pillars and pieces of limestone, behind which runs a low podium foundation wall, of which the western beginning was discovered. The "b" part of the courtyard therefore appears to be an ambulatory, bounded by pillars and a low podium; but that it was covered cannot be asserted, as it is lacking any indication of coverage. Set against the northern wall, three amphorae were found on February 25th. Beyond the ambulatory is, in the north-west corner, formed by the western wall of the courtyard and the low podium, a fragmented terracotta dolium is fixed in the ground. In the southwestern corner of the said courtyard, two large factory basins "c" and "d" have come to light: the first "c", leaning against the western wall, externally and internally covered with strong plaster, with filled corners, it is 0.60 m wide, 1.13 m long, and 0.85 m deep; in the bottom there is a hemispherical recess in the middle, and externally on the north side of it there is a circular hole under the construction, which goes under the bottom of the tank, without having communicated with it. On the south side of the same tank, almost at the level of its lip, a small basin is recognizable (0.75m X 0.45m, depth 0.12m), which, through a recessed channel on the lip of the tank “c ” communicated with it. A hole is made in the wall in correspondence with the said basin, which, although crossing the thickness of the wall, fails however on the other side.

Another hole, containing an earthenware tube, is seen in the same wall at a distance of 5.60 m from the previous one, and like this one, it fails. The second basin “d”, larger, 1,68m x 1,50m and 0,45m deep, found in a higher level; it is also plastered externally and internally, and is placed in an enclosure, whose north side is leaning, so that in the other three sides you can turn around, descending three masonry steps leaning against the said north wall of the same enclosure. This tank could only be accessed from above. It should not be omitted that the west wall of the above-mentioned enclosure, which is a continuation of the courtyard wall, is built of large volcanic pieces and limestone, cemented with mortar mixed with lapillus; it is therefore a wall from after the eruption. Externally, leaning against the front side of the basin "d", can be seen, at a height of 0,80 m from the ground, a small plastered masonry channel "e", which runs from west to east, and is partly uncovered: almost in half of the uncovered section, part of a brick is found, transversely embedded; and at the west extremity it forms an elbow at right angles, to give free exit to the liquid, remaining separate the elbow of the channel by means of another cross-brick similar to the first one.

From the mentioned ambulatory “b”, climbing a small staircase of six masonry steps, covered with tiles, on the first of which was found on February 22nd a small marble base and a small vase containing the colour red, you enter room “3” with white plaster and crushed brick floor: in the floor you can see the trace of a demolished partition wall. This room communicates with the other two locations "4” and “5".

The room "4" somewhat more spacious has a white background decoration, a crushed brick floor and a window in the south wall, to which, due to the fact that it was partly walled in a later time, was given an arched shape on the top, perhaps so as not to diminish the room: at the bottom of the north wall we can see the traces of the foundation of another wall, and in the north-east corner is a certain amount of calcareous debris, similar to that of which the plaster of the room is made. Once the eruption occurred, another room overlapped with this already buried, as can be seen from a remnant of the zoccolo at the top of the walls: thus only the presence of this remnant can be reconciled with the total absence underground.

The entrance to the area "5" was walled up in later times; masonry that has now been demolished to give access to the rooms, which are to be described. The said location "5" was also built after the eruption, since the two east and south walls are made of volcanic chippings, cemented by mortar mixed with lapillus, while the other two walls have all the character of the Pompeian constructions, and are covered of a solid plaster of crushed brick. In the middle there is an irregular masonry feature “f” (2.35m high), of circular shape, formed above the ground with limestone rubble mixed with lapillus; and that it is also cemented with mortar with lapillus. Standing on this is a cylinder of lava, diam. 1,20m, protruding from the masonry by 0,50m, which in the middle has a circular hole, and laterally two openings opposite to each other, in one of which a spliced iron pin is still attached. The use of such a cylinder cannot easily be determined; it is certain, however, that it could work only when, filling the locality up to the base of the cylinder, the filling formed soil: otherwise there would be insufficient space.

In the west wall of the same location "5" there opens a large room from which, although rendered impervious by a wall of opus reticulatum, 0.40 m high, you can now only access the remaining rooms. The reason for the wall will be clarified by the following description. At the bottom of this wall, two holes made in the ground, one in the south-east corner and the other towards the north-west corner of the said enclosure: they are rectangular in shape, one measuring 0.30m X 0.28m and the other 0.28m X 0.22m, and they were found covered with tiles, and abolished. From the described location "5", climbing over the wall, you pass into the living room "6", which has a floor and plinth of mattone pesto. Around the base of the walls runs a collar of mattone pesto; which shows that on the floor, with a slope towards the southeast corner, some liquid must have had to expand, the maximum level of which however could not exceed the height of the mentioned wall, whose presence is thus justified. Almost in the centre of the hall, there is a very slight circular rise of mattone pesto "g", which rises from the floor by 0.05m, and is 1.70 m in diameter. In the north wall there is the window mentioned above, protruding in room "4"; and at the foot of the west wall, in the axis of the circular rise "g", two rectangular grooves “h" are made in the floor, one next to the other, length 1.25m, width 0.36m, depth 0.32m, internally lined with bricks, and surrounded as a whole by the mattone pesto block mentioned above; the dividing wall is 0.40 m. Leaning against the same west wall is a sturdy pillar of bricks and pieces of Nocera tufa, after which, at the foot of the said wall, two other grooves "i", "k" of different sizes are seen in the floor: The first “i” formed in a lava stone is square (0,31m squared), and the uncovered wall is 0,24 deep; the lava stone is surrounded by the usual mattone pesto collar. The second hollow "k" is built, and is 0.70m long, 0.50m wide, the uncovered part is 1.43m deep; it too is surrounded by the collar. The two grooves are 0.35 m apart. In the east wall of the said room, next to the entrance (that is, the one enclosed by the low wall), there was another room, which was walled up at the back. On the north wall, towards the northeast corner, many vertical and parallel lines are drawn in black, divided by tens by longer lines. Other similar lines are traced on the north face of the sturdy pillar leaning against the west wall; also, some numbers including:

       XXX

CIXXV

CXXXXVIII

On the east side of the hall, the mattone pesto was interrupted, to make room for some planks or other wooden work in front of the entrance to the location "7": the presence of the planking is argued, as well as by the joint along the edge of said entrance, by two lava bases with joints for the wooden feet. Along the south wall of the locality “7” there is a short channel in the ground, that on the one hand succeeds in the southeast corner of the described room, where is precisely the slope of that floor, and on the other enters a circular masonry basin (diam. 0,48m), which in turn, through another channel, which can be considered as continuation of the first, communicates with a masonry tank “L”, length 1.65m, width 1 15m, depth 1.70m. covered with plaster, and in which one descended through four high steps of plastered masonry. Close to the channel, hollowed in the ground, is a rectangular hole, m long, 0.30m, 0.16m wide, depth of the uncovered part 0.90m. Along the north side runs the usual mattone pesto collar, which almost separates this location from the other adjacent"8", and at which stands a remnant of a limestone column, leaning against a brick pillar, of which there is still a residue. Finally, the east wall originally had a room, walled afterwards by the ancients themselves, who constructed a graceful recess. The adjacent enclosure "8" is almost entirely occupied by a circular masonry tank "m", 1.70m in diameter. and of 1.55m depth, placed above earth and rubble, and accessible only from above: its construction is later than the eruption. In the ground there is a square compartment (0.50 m sq), which having a depth of 2.30 m, communicates with the underground. In the west wall was a lararium painting, to which was attached the rear masonry: you can see in the middle the Genius familiaris sacrificing on the altar, between the two Lari with rhyton and the patera, of which the one on the left is almost totally destroyed. What distinguishes this painting from the others of the same class is the presence of Pan, who on the one hand and the other closes the representation in a symmetrical pose. At the middle of the room "6" and location "7", there is the large basin "9" plastered in the interior, and with a collar that runs along the base of the walls. Lastly to the west of the said room, is located room "10", closed on each side and that forms an avant-corps: it has the plaster of mattone pesto and a window in the west wall. In the current state of the excavation it is not possible to explain the buildings that have come to light, most of all the part that remains outside the edifice described. Only one thing I think I can say, and it is that after the eruption, at different times there has been opening out and construction in this building; which was originally only an officina, as is clearly the result of the description. But which industry was practising there, there was no evidence from which to decide.

Fase. Gennaio 1881, pag. 30. Scavi in Castelsardo).
