HGE15A Pompeii. 2009 re-excavation of three Samnite graves by the Via Consolare Project.
The location of three graves is clustered around the base of the wall.
The two graves in the metal frames are also visible on the other side of the gap in the wall.
Excavations in 2009 were carried out by the Via Consolare Project and their report commented that:
Extensive modern deposits were removed from the area, revealing three heavily reconstructed, irregularly-aligned inhumation cist-graves.
It is likely that these constructions are the result of the excavations of A. Maiuri in the 1930-40’s and were a component of his preparations of the Villa for general display that included replanting the viridarium and running water to the nymphaeum.
