Part 5 Part 1 Part 2 VI.8.3 and VI.8.5 Room Plan
VI.8.5 Pompeii. March 2009. Doorway to room 9, cubiculum.
According to Bianco in Rivista di Studi Pompeiani, when found this cubiculum was beautifully decorated.
Today the decoration has been totally lost.
The lower walls would have had a dark red dado (zoccolo).
The walls were divided into red and yellow panels, the middle panel on each wall was yellow.
In the central yellow panel were mythological paintings.
Apollo and Daphne on the north wall.
Europa on the Bull on the south wall.
Phryxus and Helle on the west wall.
On the east wall was the doorway to the atrium.
On high was a frieze showing Amazons, this was interrupted in the centre of the west wall with a painting of Venus Pompeiana.

Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number ADS 265.
The image on the ICCD database is reversed from those shown in two drawings by Zahn.
The three signatures are also reversed when compared with ADS 264 (below).
Consequently we have flipped this painting so that the subject aligns with the drawings of Zahn and the signatures align with ADS 264.

VI.8.5 Pompeii. Room 9, pencil/crayon and watercolour paintings from frieze from upper wall of cubiculum, found on the left side of the Venus Pompeiana (on a long wall).
These paintings were preserved on two walls (south and west) and only part on a third and were separated on the south and west wall by paintings of a cupid and Venus Pompeiana.
They were left in situ, and now are totally faded and lost, the only record being these paintings by an anonymous painter.
It is thought they were probably made by Giuseppe Marsigli, who painted in this house at the time they were discovered.
