V.2.19 Pompeii. December 2007. East wall, with north-east corner of rear room.
According to NdS, on the east wall of the rear room a painted landscape was seen (1.05 high x 0.93 wide) (Bull. p.275 and following).
The usual shrine was seen with its relative sacred tree by a river; in the shrine – a female idol was recognisable.
On each of the two bases flanking the steps of the shrine stood a herm, as it seems.
Before the temple was an altar decorated with garlands on which were placed two oars (two torches according to Mau), towards the right was the figure of a praying woman. In the river, which Mau had seen less clearly, seven boats were able to be seen with sufficient certainty, painted with a glimpse, in one of which were two rowers in clear tunics and with low hats on their heads.
The painting of the landscape was damaged in the lower left corner.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1891, p. 271-2.
