V.2.10 Pompeii. May 2005. Peristyle.
According to NdS, the peristyle garden abutted the west wall but there was a portico around the other three sides.
The portico was supported by columns joined together by a masonry pluteus.
The low masonry walls made compartments dedicated to cultivation of plants, perhaps flower beds.
The floor level of part of the east walkway and all of the north walkway was elevated to reach the height of the wall (pluteus) which connected between the columns.

V.2.10 Pompeii. 1890. East wall of room 9, cubiculum.
Drawing of the wall painting of Marsyas, Minerva and the Muses.
Minerva’s helmeted figure, partly obliterated, sits, piping, on a rock near a shrine. Her shield is by her side.
She is looking at an attendant nymph who emerges from the water holding a large mirror which is tilted slightly upwards.
A figure with a cornucopia sits watching nearby.
On the top of the rocky outcrop above Minerva’s head stands Marsyas, leaning forward listening or gazing.
Marsyas picks up the pipes that Minerva throws away.
To the centre of the picture, Marsyas is playing the double flute as he draws near to the procession of Muses led by Apollo who he will soon challenge in a musical contest.

According to Mau –
“The First style decoration was conserved in both rooms 11 and 12. The simplicity of this decoration – yellow zoccolo, red frieze, then white stucco – in the two most spacious rooms of the house, triclinia without doubt, demonstrated that it was inhabited at that time by people of modest means”.
