I.11.15, Pompeii. May 2016.
Fragment of Nilotic scene which decorated the parapet of the upper floor balcony, found 1952-53. Photo courtesy of Buzz Ferebee.
The display card states that both fragments were once part of a single large fresco.
According to Grete Stefani, the painting (SAP 56310a) is very interesting and has only recently been made known to scholars.
Detached from a wall of Pompeii in an unspecified period, it was preserved, without any indication of its provenance, in the Pompeii Excavations' Restoration Workshop and, despite the efforts made, it had so far not been able to trace the original location of the painting.
New data presented here, on the other hand, may help to clarify, in addition to the provenance, some iconographic aspects.
In fact, the photographic documentation of 1953 relating to the painting is preserved at the Photographic Archive of the Superintendence when it was still on site on the external side of the opus craticium wall that delimited the balcony on the upper floor of the house of Pompeii I 11, 15 (Photo SAP A 1522, Fig. 4); the painting also included a portion with hippos, now restored as a panel in its own right and whose relevance had been lost and a contiguous portion, now lost.
See Stefani, G. 2010. Luoghi e Personificazioni di luoghi nelle Pitture dell'area Vesuviana: AIPMA 2010, p. 258, fig. 4.
Our thanks to Domenico Esposito for his help in verifying the provenance of these fragments.
